How to make a Rain Harvester

Things you will need.
  • A container to hold the water
  • A large plastic bag
  • Two lengths of bamboo
  • A twisty tie
  • Some strong plastic tape
  • Rain

What to do:

  1. Take your bamboo sticks, cross the ends and push them into the ground at an angle halfway between upright and lying down.
  2. Use the twisty tie to secure the crossed ends together
  3. Cut off the end of rubbish bag, then cut down one side to make a large sheet.
  4. Use the tape to attach the bag to the sticks. Make sure that you tape around the top of each stick so that the plastic can slide down. When you have finished, the rain harvester should look like a sail, with some extra plastic draped over the sides.
  5. Position the container under the rain harvester at the bottom, where the sticks cross over.
  6. Test your rain harvester by pouring water down the plastic to ensure the water collects in the container. You may need to make a small cut in the plastic at the bottom to direct the water into the container

Plan:

Sources say that there is a small amount of marine life living in the Tamaki River. Even though there is life, the river contains large amounts of rubbish which affects  the rivers and adulterates the water which can harm the marine life. They are trying to figure out how to clean the Tamaki River so marine life can continue to live in the river. Many reports have included how unacceptable the environmental health is. Cars that produce carbon dioxide, antique wheel tyres and unused paint buckets are one of the causes that can also contaminate the river's health. Therefore, swimming in the river is not recommended as it contain many bacteria. As the river becomes more polluted, the more chances it will infect other streams, rivers or oceans.

Sources say that the Navy has joined forces with a special charity to clean one of the filthiest waterways, the Tamaki River. Trainees have collected about 25 cubic metres of rubbish from three spots from the river. They collected many kinds of rubbish which includes plastic, tyres, glass, aluminum cans and metal. They say that they have been coming back to the Tamaki River to clean the rubbish for many years but it would refill again with rubbish. When they have been cleaning the river for two hours, they found out that they have collected over 25 thousand cubic metres or 25 millions litres of rubbish which was so atrocious to do. However it was all worth it at the end because they have reduced the rubbish levels at the Tamaki River. When they went back they looked at the rubbish they've collected for the past years, they saw they have collected over 4 millions cubic metres of rubbish which was insane.

Plan:
  • To remind people that some of us have water worries
  • To persuade people that we need to take care of our water supplies.
  • To stop people from wasting water.
  • To increases the awareness of people losing water.
  • To tell people that we can lose water at anytime.
  • To let people know that we lose a great amount of water when it doesn't rain.
  • Many reasons the article was made.
  • It is faced by many people around the world.
  • Many causes and effects for water shortages.
Problems of the Manawatu River:
  • It has no fencing.
  • Livestock animals can contaminate the water.
  • Carbon dioxide from cars can pollute the river.
  • Rubbish can easily get into the river.

Explanation
Water worries are faced by many people around the world whether they're living near a water source or far from a water source. The article 'Water Worries' made by Rachael McMillan was made for various reasons. These include:
  • reminders to people about water worries
  • to persuade people to take care of our water
  • stop people from wasting water
  • increase the awareness of people losing their water.
The article usually talks about:
  • how water is made
  • how important it is
  • what would occur if we had a water shortage.

The article was made to mainly stop people from wasting water. If our water is wasted by many living humans, then one day we could have continuous water shortages and people would have many problems such as not being able to take showers and getting dehydrated. People waste water in many different ways such as taking long showers, leaving the sink on and pouring drinkable water outside. Many people already suffer from water shortages which is very sorrowful and depressing.

This as a result can occur to many deaths because people getting dehydrated.  People should always remember to save water even if they think they have an infinite water source because our water source is isn't infinite and rain doesn't pour always which gives us our water.

Water worries can get very severe so we need to start taking care of it. We can start by calling our community to help you clean the nearest river or stream. Landowners who own land that contains a river can build a barrier around it. However, they have to follow the rules when building a fence to help the river like how much space is needed between the fence and the river so plants and grass could grow. People are not allowed to get water from the river to purify unless they ask the landowner.

If people are aware of them losing their water, they will be more cautious and they will also start to clean in many different ways. They could even build a fence around so people would stop throwing rubbish because nature that grows will create a shield for the river.

Our precious rivers and stream that contain our water is very important. A lot of hardworking people have begun cleaning our streams around our planet. You can learn more about this in the article, "Water Worries" made by Rachael McMillan: Water Worries.
