Advent - Preparing for Christ to come again

Magic Milk Experiment

Experiment 1:
Materials:
-saucer
- 50 ml of milk
- 2 drops of different colours of food colouring
- squirt of detergent

Hypothesis:
Our hypothesis is that the colours will break its separation between themselves and will mix together when
the detergent is added.

What had happened:
Our hypothesis was valid because as we applied the 3 unique colours into the milk, it had tension between
them. However, when detergent was added it started to break its tension allowing the colours to bleed and
blend into each other.

Astria Student Prompts

With increasing online and digital content, it is difficult to know real information
from 'fake news'. Using evidence from the game you played (Astria: Countdown
to Impact) write a blog to list the top 5 things you think people should watch out
for to help identify fake news.
Many people are posting fake news to grab other people attention. These
are five things people can do to help them identify fake news:
1. If something sounds sketchy, unbelievable or suspicious, search the
internet and check various website before confirming its truthfulness.
2. Check the sources the author/publisher has gotten his
information/news from. If it isn't well known or he/she hasn't put one
in, it may be fake.
3. Check the story's sentence structure, if its too dramatic or any spelling
mistakes are visible then it may be fake as well.
4. Check other news reports, if there aren't at least two news reports that
say the same perspective or news, then it may be fake.
5. Try to remember if you've heard of a similar news in the past. People
try to recycle old news but taking old news and changing the stories and
people involved.

On a scale of 1-5, how successfully did you problem solve with your partner today?
Please include any ways you would collaborate differently with them next time
you play.

On a scale of 1-5, I think that my performance and teamwork with my
partner is a 4. In my opinion, I interacted with her but I think it was
enough. Our environment distracted either of us delaying in us in our
work. We could've also worked and work together better. Next time I
would collaborate with my partner even more to get the most ideas of
both of us.

Astria - Countdown to Impact Argument

A student in another school has recently blogged that:
“Students don’t learn much playing this game called Astria –
Countdown to Impact: Their time could be better spent doing
other things”.
Do you agree, disagree or partly agree/disagree?
Blog about what you think using evidence from the game to
backup your views.

I disagree, the game teaches students how to identify
how biased or truthful the game is. Through the rating
system, students can rate the in-game's website's/link's
biasedness, source and factuality. The skill can help
students make better choices when finding facts online.

Safe Play Explanation

WALHT: Write a detailed explanation about safe play.
Safe Play Explanation
Safe Play is when you play safely with each other in an appropriate manner. Safe play is
important because it helps children to keep the skill of playing nice with each other. Safe
play should be always done by everyone including adults.

Safe play is an essential thing when playing because if everyone is nice and kind with
each other, no will be hurt and there will no more problems. Everyone is happy! If
children don't play safely, someone could get hurt which might lead to a severe injury
that could cause permanent damage.

When everyone is playing safely, it will be fair to everyone. No one will be crying and
everyone gets to enjoy all of the playground equipment. This way, no one will be left
behind and everyone will be enjoying the time of their life.

Playing safely can be difficult to some children. Sometimes friends can peer pressure
other people to perform dangerous stunts that can lead to injuries, which also makes the
child scream in pain. Playing on the park should be fun and it should be played the right
and safeful way.

Everyone should be play carefully on the park so everyone enjoys their time. No one
should be peer pressured from the friends or from any other people because it can lead
to injuries. Playing safely is better than playing with your hardcore friends.

The Messages

The Messages
She stared at the screen in the darkness. "Who was sending these messages?
Is Jack really real?", she asked herself. It was creeping her out. Until she finally
heard a text alert from the closet behind her. She turned around and slowly
begins to stand. She creeped towards the closet while taking deep breaths.
She opened the closet, there was a short scream, and Miya was never found again…

Two nights earlier - Around the start of May
Miya has been receiving unusual text messages every night since the start of
May. They didn't have an online name and there was no profile picture as well.
Miya just went along with the flow, she was cybersmart even though she was
only young, 13 to be exact. She knew she must not  share any personal
information. Apparently the person she was talking to was 'Jack' who was in the
same class as her. Jack even offered her to meet him in the woods in the middle
of the night, but Miya denied the offer. She turned off her PC and went to sleep
to refresh her mind for the following day.

Duffy Assembly - 11th of September

On the 11th of September, St. Patrick visited the hall to meet one of the Duffy Heroes, Henry.
Henry introduced himself and how reading books as changed and formed his life. He started
with how he visited a shop filled with books but has never heard or read a book before and he
thought they were DvDs. The clerk aided him with his confusions about the DvDs and told him
they were books. His interest in books quickly increased as he found its interestingness and
unexpected adventures books can have. Throughout his life, he would read books at the library
every Thursday to increase his reading skills and vocabulary.

Everyone enjoyed Henry's stories especially the junior children and his comedic actions and
stories even made the senior people giggle and laugh. All of the students loved and appreciated
their time at the hall because Henry's comical stories were the best of the best.

To end the event, one of the Yr 7 students, Xavier, thanked him on behalf of our school to thank
him for visiting us and sharing his stories and experiences. Henry was generous enough to give our
school a box of Duffy books for all the students. Everyone will be inspired by Henry's stories and
more children will start reading more books to expand their mind, vocabulary and imagination.

The Mysterious Figure

The Mysterious Figure

Josh was just a young boy, around 11 years old when he saved his parents from an 'alien invasion'.
However, it has been 4 years and he is now 15 years old, he has been solving extraterrestrial
problems that have been unusually occurring since then but this time, a new nemesis was about
to emerge with a plan of world domination, this was not going to be a simple task.

One day when Josh was practising to control his new power, the blue sky darkened and became
gloomy as the sun vanished from the finite sky. Josh knew it was his time to rescue the world again.
His dad was just too old to accompany him on his missions, so he gave his beloved son the special
bronze star badge which he received right before the events of the 'alien invasion'. Josh's dad
constantly believed in Josh and he knew he could do accomplish what he wanted but Josh wanted
to end risking his life and staying with his family. After all, Josh was the youngest superhero on Earth,
but he still knew that he had other things he could spend time with his family on.

Josh flew to the sky to scout the area for any unusual things in his town while he felt hesitation in his
mind. Josh really persuaded himself to go back to his home but he had to save all of his friends who
were inside playing their personal consoles, ignoring the fact that the sky outside has darkened. He
found out that the library was where the kind old sailor was and the hospital where received his materials
for his ship but he noticed the bakery was gone. As he gazed upon where it used to be, the library
was half gone, its roof was torn apart from its walls. He flew on top of it to investigate anyone or
anything causing the unusual occurrences.

As Josh listened carefully, he noticed and was certain that someone was there and as swiftly as he
could, he turned his head to see his new enemy...

Can you ride a unicycle around the world?

As part of our independent reading programme we use Kiwikidsnews to learn about news in New
Zealand (national news) and around the world (international news).
WALHT: Read closely to analyse an article and to think critically about the messages within them.

1. Find a quote from the main person in this news article.
There is no visible quote from the main person in the news article.

2. In your own words describe what happened in this news article.
British cyclist, Ed Pratt dedicated himself to venturing around the world starting from the age
of 19. His trip was nearly a 35,500 kilometer ride through the mountains of Asia, Vietnam and
Malaysia, the US and most importantly, New Zealand. By July 31st, he completed his
first-round world trip and as a part of his journey, was able to raise $570,000 NZD for a
education charity.

3. Find out where this event took place and include some information about this place.
This event never took place at a certain city or town but Ed Pratt started at UK.
UK is actually made of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island with an area of an
astounding 242,492 km². The population of the country around 2016 was about 65.64 million
and its beautiful wise prime minister, Theresa May.

4. Tell us when this event happened and explain what might happen in the future.
This event took place on the 31st of August and I predict Ed Pratt may celebrate his
extraordinary achievement and donate more money to charity in countries around the
world to help and support their daily lives.

5. Explain in your own words why this event took place.
This event took place because Ed Pratt was so amazed about the world's different countries,
culture and their people.

6. Use the Dictionary in the bottom right hand corner to find the meaning of 3 words from the article.
charity - an organization set up to provide help and raise money for others.
unicycle - a cycle with a single level
tropical - something peculiar to the tropics

Potato Power?

WALHT: Investigating the use of vegetables as a power source, using potatoes
we investigated their energy and the strength of that via the use of a voltmeter.

WP - Whole Potato
H - Halves

1 wp (2h) - 1.68 volts
2 wp (4h) - 2.99 volts
3 wp (6h) - 4.60 volts
4 wp (8h) - 5.91 volts
5 wp (10h) - 7.34 volts
6 wp (12h) - 8.69 volts
7 wp (14h) - 9.68 volts

Overall the amount of volts (energy) can vary depending on the size of potato.
This is because when I my second tests, the reading on the voltmeter was different - it had about 0.50 volts difference. However the average amount of volts inside one potato is about 1.3 volts, but bigger potatoes might contain 1.5 - 1.6 volts and smaller potatoes might
contain 1 - 1.3 volts.

On a day with cumulus clouds, in Vatican city, an artistic girl who just got her braces was
holding a bottle filled with chlorophyll was reading an ode coloured by a dye called litmus.
There was also a nearby speaker whose concept was to only speak one pronoun if he was
given a response. He had a tendency to help people while he was just standing there.
There was also molecules in a percussion instrument behind him that made it unaffected
by gravity and flew pass by an eruption and ended up in the infinite universe. At the end,
the girl continued walking while the distillation machine she was wearing on her back was
still working aided by the adjustment she made and she even knew that her parent's
business finance was going down.
