Chemical Reaction of Sodium Bicarbonate and Acetic Acid!

Today at Science, we learnt about the effects of the chemical reaction when we mixed sodium bicarbonate (baking powder) with acetic acid (vinegar). We followed various steps to successfully accomplish our experiment.

First we started of by filling a bottle with 150 ml of acetic acid with the help of our trusty pink funnel. Using the funnel we filled our small balloon with sodium bicarbonate.

We were cautious not to tip the balloon because we thought it might trigger the chemical reaction, making a mess. Before we tipped it, we would have to travel to the grass just in case anything went wrong with the experiment.

As we tipped it, the tiny balloon started to fill up with CO₂ (carbon dioxide) coming from the solution of our base (sodium bicarbonate) and acid (acetic acid). Therefore the balloon started to expand like polyester.

Overall, Week 8 of Science was a very remarkable and spectacular day because I personally love doing scientific experiments!

Water Cycle Model - Day 1

Our Water Cycle model!
Materials:
  • a large metal or plastic bowl
  • a pitcher or bucket
  • a sheet of clear plastic wrap
  • a dry ceramic mug (preferably a coffee mug)
  • a long piece of string or large rubber band
  • water
Steps:
  1. Put the bowl in a sunny place outside.
  2. Using the pitcher or bucket, pour water into the bowl until it is about ¼
  3. full.Place the mug in the centre of the bowl. Be careful not to splash any water into it.
  4. Cover the top of the bowl tightly with the plastic wrap.
  5. Tie the string around the bowl to hold the plastic wrap in place.
  6. Watch the bowl to see what happens.

Day 1: We prepared and crafted the miniature model of the water cycle using this website: The Water Project.

The Chinese numbers are fun to learn!

Learning Intention: We are learning to recognise the Chinese system.
Success Criteria: I know I can do this when I record myself signing the numbers 1 - 10 in Chinese.

Technicraft - States of Matter

Today in Technicraft, we learnt about the different states of matter. We learned about the molecules of solid, liquid and gas.
Image result for states of matterTo help us learn more about the states of matter, we borrowed the chromebooks from Pakuranga Intermediate to help us learn more. Our Technicraft teacher, Ms. Gawith told us the website which helped us with our learning.
We went on the interactive and it had an activity and a quiz at the end to see how much we have learnt. This week we never made anything but it was still fun because we learnt more about the states of matter.

Next week I hope we could learn more about the the other states of matters like plasma.

Explanation about Ash Wednesday

What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is a liturgical celebration in the liturgical calendar. It is an ancient celebration about Christians remembering that Jesus is the most important thing on Earth and in heaven and nothing will ever be more important than him.

Image result for ashesAsh Wednesday is usually celebrated in a mass. In some schools, students write what they would give up in the fire. The fire symbolises the love of Jesus for us. We burn our treasures in the love of Jesus because it is less important than him. Children and adults also celebrate Ash Wednesday by going to mass and receiving ash.

In England people celebrate Ash Wednesday by making holy pancakes and bread and giving it to people. In the Philippines people go to mass with palms for the priest to bless it. They bless the palms so it can be placed on the windows or the doors because it takes away the evil spirits. Even though countries celebrate it in different ways, they are still remembering God as the most important one.

Ash Wednesday is a very important day because it represents the first day of Lent which are the days for preparing for Easter. Ash Wednesday is also a very holy and special day because all of the Christians remember Jesus starting his journey in the desert.

Ash Wednesday is a very well known liturgical celebration for all of the Christians. Christians have been celebrating Ash Wednesday for a very long time. Even though Ash Wednesday is an antique celebration, Christians will never forget its meaning and how it is celebrated because Jesus will always be there for them to help them.

WALHT: Write an explanation about Ash Wednesday.

Low Tide

Low Tide by Sarah Penwarden
I walk beside you
across mudflats in
my blue gumboots,
Image result for low tide in beachover crackling oyster
shells, green-ribbed pipi,
the traces of wading birds.

When the tide is out, what lies exposed:
river threads of mud, old brown stones,
tiny muscles yet to grow;
my sole prints left
on the ocean's
bones.
